Over the last 5 decades, Janet Gralka has worked to become an authority on world cuisines and quality food products and ingredients.
Janet’s grandfather, Pasqualino Labriola, opened Labriola Food Center in 1928 in the East End of Pittsburgh after emigrating from Italy. Her father, Joseph Labriola, took over the business and in 1959 expanded to include Joseph Labriola Sausage Company. Joseph Labriola Sausage Company became “world famous in Pittsburgh” by serving local stores, restaurants, and pizza shops. Janet grew up working in her father’s store and learning about how to best meet customers’ needs.
Her first hand appreciation for quality ingredients, homemade foods, and a warm atmosphere led Janet to open That Italian Place in 1978 with her husband Charles. Serving the South Hills of Pittsburgh, That Italian Place’s selections included Joseph Labriola Sausage, deli meats and sandwiches, and other homemade specialty items. Charles eventually took over the operations of Joseph Labriola Sausage Company. As time progressed, they realized that there was a growing demand for a more diverse offering of specialty items from around the world. In 1986, The UnCommon Market opened to meet these needs.
